Starting a career in STEM 

If I were to list all of the possible careers in STEM, I'd be writing for about 50 days. STEM is an incredibly broad concept and the potential careers within STEM vary greatly. Deciding that you want to pursue a career in STEM is the first step to unlocking a wholesome, fulfilling career where you can truly make a difference. 

Before someone can dive into a career in STEM, it is crucial to understand its foundation. STEM is an integral part of our everyday lives and its influence spans numerous sectors. But what exactly is STEM? 

So, first things first. 

What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It refers to any subjects that fall under these four categories. STEM careers are those that offer vast opportunities, high paying jobs, and a chance to make significant contributions to innovation and technology. SO let’s break down each letter that’s incorporated into the word STEM.

  1. Science

Science, as a part of STEM, encompasses a wide range of disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. Just to name a few. There’s loads more! Scientists in these fields conduct experiments, analyze data, and make discoveries that shape our understanding of the world around us.

  1. Technology

Technology, another pillar of STEM, focuses on the application of scientific knowledge to create solutions. This includes the development of software, hardware, and other technological advancements that improve our lives and drive progress.

  1. Engineering

Engineering is a field that combines science and technology and is primarily all about designing, building, and maintaining structures, machines, and systems. Engineers use their creativity and technical skills to solve complex problems and create innovative solutions.

  1. Mathematics

Mathematics, the final component of STEM, is the language of logic and reasoning. It provides the tools and techniques necessary for analysing data, making predictions, and solving real-world problems. Mathematicians play a crucial role in industries such as finance, technology, and research.

So like I said before, STEM covers an incredibly broad range of subjects and career opportunities. But what makes STEM careers stand out and differ from other fields?

Why choose a career in STEM?

A career in STEM is immensely rewarding. Look, I may be a little biased. But I’m going to prove to you just how rewarding a career in STEM can be! 

Besides having a significant impact on the world, you’ll have a front-row seat to the latest trends and technologies before they even reach the mainstream. The world of STEM is constantly evolving, with new discoveries and innovations being made every single day. As a STEM professional, you’ll have the opportunity to be at the forefront of these advancements, contributing to groundbreaking research and development. Furthermore, STEM fields are known for their emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking skills. By working in STEM related jobs you’ll constantly be challenged to think outside the box and find innovative solutions to complex problems. STEM careers also offer the opportunity to make a significant impact on society. Acquiring a degree in STEM

Acquiring a degree in your desired STEM field is typically the first step towards a successful career. It is important to carefully consider universities known for their strong STEM curriculum and research opportunities within those institutions. Enrolling in these programs can provide you with a systematic understanding and exposure needed to excel in your chosen field.

During your degree, you will have the opportunity to delve deep into the foundational concepts of your field. Whether it’s studying the intricacies of physics, exploring the world of computer science, or unraveling the mysteries of biology, a STEM degree will lay a solid foundation for your future endeavors. Whilst pursuing a degree in STEM it’s also of paramount importance to gain real life experience through internships and work placements.

While theoretical knowledge is essential, practical exposure is just as important in any STEM education. This can be obtained through research assignments and these internships should be readily available to all pursuing a STEM degree. These opportunities allow you to apply your theoretical knowledge into practice and in turn will reinforce your learning. 

Okay, now you understand the principles involved in what a STEM career can offer and also the pathway to get there. We now need to navigate the job market. The final step in the transition journey of starting a career in STEM. 

Understanding job roles and industries 

Before applying for any STEM related job, research the industry and roles of your interest. Understand the skills required, the scope of the job, and future prospects associated with the roles. Remember, information is key to making informed decisions.

The next thing you’ve got to do is something that I as a coach, and all successful companies recommend doing; network.

Networking is an invaluable asset. There’s SO many ways in which you can network and get your name out there. Attend seminars, workshops, and other networking events related to your field and attend with a smile on your face! Make connections with professionals in your industry as they can offer mentorship, guidance, and even job opportunities; both now and in the future. 

In conclusion, transitioning into a STEM career requires careful planning and preparation from you, the individual. Understanding STEM basics, recognising your interests and strengths, acquiring education and skills, crafting a strong resume, and gaining a solid grasp of the job market are crucial steps in this transition. 

It’s an incredibly rewarding industry to be part of and one where you genuinely change the world around us. With new, innovative technologies being discovered each day, STEM careers enable us to stick with the trends, stick with the education and stick with the unbelievable discoveries that we’re making on a daily basis.
